On Nov. 18, David Lynch is releasing a new DVD box set that's full of both classic, rare and never-before-seen Lynch material. It's called the David Lynch: The Lime Green Set, and you can pre-order it from Amazon right now by clicking this link.

Herzog and Lynch team for murder drama

CANNES (Hollywood Reporter) - Directors Werner Herzog and David Lynch are teaming for "My Son, My Son," a horror-tinged murder drama based on a true story.

Herzog and his longtime assistant director Herbert Golder co-wrote "Son," loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword.

The low-budget feature will flash back and forth from the murder scene to the disturbed man's story. A guerrilla-style digital video shoot on location is tentatively set for March. Lynch is executive producing the project.

Herzog is having a busy year. He was set to film "Son" in the summer but postponed it to direct Nicolas Cage in a remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992 cop drama "Bad Lieutenant" starting in July. In the fall, he will shoot the Victorian-era drama "The Piano Tuner" for Focus Features.

HOLLYWOOD,CA, (Hollywood Today) May 3, 2008 - Four time Oscar nominee David Lynch told Hollywood Today that he is working on a new film “Catching The Big Fish,’’ a road movie shot about his dialogues with regular folk on the meaning of life, with the likes of 60’s troubadour Donovan and John Hagelin, the physicist, as traveling companions.

The “Lynch-esque’’documentary is another example of this Cannes Festival winner‘s visionary take on creativity. He notes he traveled the globe with his multi-camera crew looking to catch his next big fish, and in keeping with his surreal film and TV past, says his plan was no less than to explore the world’s mind.

He concludes that “people have a right to be happy but they don’t know it. A lot of artists are attached to the idea that to create one must suffer and live in pain. I used to have a lot of anger and depression but when you have a constant migraine, you can’t create anything and Transcendental Meditation has really taught me that.”

On tour to promote his bestseller, “Catching The Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity,” Lynch, whose mind has fascinated the world with its dark and often disturbing images, states “ the receptivity to the concept of meditation is catching on,” and “ people see other people’s bliss and they want it for themselves.”

The heart of The David Lynch Foundation (www.DavidLynchFoundation.org) was ignited as he saw school violence on the increase in the nation. His book, upcoming film and seminars are his contribution to the TM practice from which he has benefited, and that he believes makes “people look familiar and look like friends.”

David Lynch known for his recurrent collaborations with several of the same actors like Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton and crew in his productions extends his loyalty to family. When asked about a possible family collaboration with daughter Jennifer Chambers Lynch, he told us, “She just finished shooting a film called “Surveillance”, it is going to Cannes next year.” David Lynch is executive producer.

Questioned about the commercial appeal of his films, Lynch told Hollywood Today, “When things are abstract as they are in my films, not exactly like a Hollywood film, the commercial side is never really big.”

He added, “When I make a film I fall in love with an idea, and enjoy the doing, and then when it corrects, I put it out in the world. I then lose control over it and just hope that it connects to others, but it is kind of understandable if it doesn’t appeal to everyone.”

Lynch attributes his immense imagination to 34 years of TM. As “my mind becomes clearer, I am able to catch ideas like a big fish. You can catch it. You can cook it. You can even eat it, but you can’t create a big fish.”

Some of the big fish that Lynch has been able to catch are rock stars such as David Bowie and Marilyn Manson. Their willingness to contribute to his soundtracks is legendary but in Lynch’s words, it is quite simple, “just pay them good money. When it fits, it’s a good marriage.” And when pushed to further elaborate on the connection, Lynch exclaimed, “I am a rock star!”

And to clarify his IMDB listed salary of $1,000, “it’s my per minute rate,” he added with good humor. A salary more fit for the rock star that he is.

LOST HIGHWAY getting U.S. DVD release!

At long last, Lost Highway is getting a proper U.S. DVD release. This widescreen version should be much better than the full-screen, pan-and-scan version that's been the only Region 1 release of it previously.

This set should be incredible. In addition to having the entire Twin Peaks series, it's got both versions of the pilot, deleted scenes and brand new interviews that were not part of either of the two individual season box sets.

I cannot put into words how happy I am about this!

Fight for FWWM deleted scenes

For most Twin Peaks fans, the holy grail - that thing that we all desire and, so far, have not attained - is the set of deleted scenes from "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" that David Lynch hand picked.

For those who aren't familiar with this story, Lynch reportedly shot about twice the amount of footage for "Fire Walk With Me" that was used in the final cut of the film. Many of the scenes that were cut from the movie featured characters from the series who ended up not making it into the finished film. Needless to say, Peaks fans are fascinated with the idea of seeing what other familiar faces from the town of Twin Peaks were doing before Laura Palmer died.

Lynch hand-picked about a hour's worth of these scenes to be edited and scored, and that work has been done. The hope is that MK2, the company that now owns the rights to the film, will include this set of deleted scenes in a new DVD release.

A movement has been afoot for some time to try to get MK2 to move forward, and you can help.

Twin Peaks "definitive" box set in the works

I had previously reported rumors that yet another Twin Peaks DVD box set could be in the works - one that would include the pilot and both seasons. This is apparently rumor no more. Dugpa.com (a great resource for all things Twin Peaks/David Lynch) is reporting that it is definitely in the works.

No release date yet, but this is exciting news. Hopefully the "Definitive Gold Box Edition" will include some great special features that neither of the individual season sets had.

Twin Peaks Festival 2007

For anyone interested in attending the annual Twin Peaks Festival in North Bend, Washington, it is being held July 27-29 this summer.

'Inland Empire' DVD available for pre-ordering

Great news! The two-disc DVD of David Lynch's newest film, "Inland Empire," is available for pre-ordering at Amazon.com (click below to pre-order):

Amazon lists the release date as July 24, although reports lately have said it will come out August 14. To be on the safe side, I'm assuming it's going to be the latter.

Either way, it's exciting that it'll be out on DVD soon. I did get to see it in the theater, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm desperate to own the DVD because, like many of Lynch's films (especially "Mulholland Drive" and "Lost Highway"), "Inland Empire" will require multiple viewings for a decent comprehension of what takes place during the three-hour feast for the senses.

Season 2 DVD special features - and what would you want?

I've watched all the special features from the Season 2 set (except for the easter eggs, which I understand exist, but I haven't found them yet). My overall thought is that they're very good but just too short.

The selection of people interviewed for the set is great, both in terms of actors and crew members. But why cut the interviews so short? Surely these people have more to say about being part of such a groundbreaking series.

Perhaps, though, more material from those interviews will appear on the rumored full-series box set.

Which brings me to a little poll of sorts: If a box set containing the entire series does get released, what special features would you like to see on it that the previous two season box sets don't have? Post your answer in a comment.

Done with Season 2 episodes

I finished watching the Season 2 episodes on DVD tonight. It's truly amazing what the upgrade in picture/sound quality can do for the experience of watching the series.

I still have not watched any of the special features in the set but look forward to them.

What was that Leland was singing?

Ever wondered what that crazy song is in Episode 8 (the first episode of season 2) that Leland sings both at his home (in front of Sarah and Maddy) and again at Ben Horne's office (prompting Ben and Jerry to dance)?

It's "Mairzy Doats," a 1943 novelty song by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston.

Season 2 DVDs so far

In the first week, I've managed to watch only the first three episodes of season 2, which comprise the first disc.

The transfers in general look good. Not quite as good as season 1, but that's to be expected, since there were only two episodes per disc in the season 1 set, whereas there are three or four episodes on each disc of season 2, which probably means the season 2 shows are more compressed.

I have not watched any of the special features yet, other than the Log Lady intros at the beginning of each episode. I'm going to hold off on watching the interviews till I'm finished watching all the episodes.

It really is great to finally have season 2 on DVD. It's immeasurably better than low-quality VHS tapes.

Season 2 DVDs here at last

Today is the perfect day for the first post on this blog, since today marks the release of the second season of Twin Peaks on DVD - something TP fans have been waiting on for six years.

My own season 2 DVD set should be arriving soon. I've heard good things about this set and can't wait to see it for myself.

I've heard rumors that at some point - possibly before the end of the year - there will be a new Twin Peaks set that includes the entire series, including the first proper DVD release of the pilot (another TP release that's long overdue). Such a set would possibly include special features that are different from either of the two individual season sets. That'd be great, as would a new DVD of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me that includes the legendary Lynch-approved deleted scenes.

But the talk about a complete-series set is just a rumor at this point, so for now I'm going to enjoy my individual season sets.
